Veggie Pride Parade 5/18 NYC

Veggie Pride Parade Sunday
May 18 at 11:00AM!

he First Veggie Pride Parade in America will take place in Greenwich Village, NYC, on May 18, 2008. The procession will begin at 12 Noon in the Meat Packing District (where 9th Ave., Gansevoort St., Greenwich St., and Little West 12th St. intersect). It will culminate in Washington Square Park (Eastern end), where a festival of rock music, speakers and exhibitors will take place. Up-and-coming vegan rock star Cheryl Hill will rouse the crowd with hits from her latest EP, Let Love In. Some may remember Cheryl as the wise woman of Vegan Wellness (NYC). Parade participants are encouraged to dress up in costumes and to wear sign boards announcing their pride in their vegetarian lifestyle. Local restaurants will represent themselves with banners. Marchers may be animal-rights activists, environmentalists, and those concerned with their health. But on May 18, 2008, all will come together with one voice, one expression, of veggie pride. At 2 p.m. on stage at the post-parade rally in Washington Square Park, the winners of a costume and poster-slogan contest in various categories will be announced. At 4 p.m., also on stage, a 7-foot-tall human pea pod, Penelo Pea Pod (long-time mascot of parade sponsor VivaVegie Society) will be married in an open wedding ceremony. The lucky guy (ur, animal? vegetable?) has yet to be identified...or to come forth. More to come on that soon! There is a special page within the Veggie Pride Parade Web site outlining how restaurants can get involved, and how both individuals and businesses can place a sponsorship ad in the official program/ad booklet. Contingents from all walks of life are encouraged to get involved. The parade is fashioned after and will take place the same weekend as the Veggie Pride Parade in Paris. The Parisian parade was the first of its kind ever to take place in the world and has been going on annually since 2001. Visit http://www.veggieprideparade.org/ for more information about volunteering and sponsorship.

Canada's C-51 Bill killing Natural Health Options

In 2003 Health Canada launched an attack on a group of mentally ill patients and the company who supported them naturally. They seized shipments of a safe natural therapy required by the patients and stormed the support center with 17 armed officers and agents. The company (Truehope) reported that they lost contact with more than 300 of their Canadian participants. The Canadian Mental Health Association told of suicides as a result of government action.

Health Canada then charged the not for profit company, burdening them with heavy legal costs. Truehope was found innocent by necessity and instructed by the judge to continue under legal and moral responsibility. Although the agents admitted knowing they were injuring people through their actions, they stated under oath they care only about policy and directive. And what happened to the more than 300 mentally ill Canadians that became unreachable? In the months and years following, reports of hospitalizations and suicides during the seizures have surfaced. No Health Canada agent has ever been charged.

Cornucopia Institute Is Prepared to Sue USDA If Agency Does Not Allow Stores to Sell Raw Almonds

An Open Letter from The Cornucopia Institute Re: The USDA's Banning Stores from Selling Raw Almonds

Hello all,

I want to provide a brief update on our visit to Washington, D.C. and our meeting with three high-ranking officials at the USDA to discuss the almond pasteurization matter.

Cornucopia's Codirector, Mark Kastel, and myself met for more than an hour with the three officials in the office of USDA Undersecretary Bruce Knight. The bulk of our discussion centered on almonds. Interestingly, we learned that half of all the comments coming into the Secretary's office at this time are on almonds! People across the country are upset with the pasteurization plan and want the ability to again buy raw, untreated domestically grown almonds. We want to thank and congratulate all our collaborators on helping elicit such a strong response.
